10 South Africa A players hospitalised owing to food poisoning
South Africa star batsman Quinton de Kock is also among the sick
Ten South Africa A players were hospitalised in Chennai on Sunday due to “food poisoning," according to the visiting team's management.
After playing the tri-series cricket match against India A, opener Quinton de Kock, who made 108 in the match, was rushed to the hospital, Press Trust of India reported.
Three other players had to abandon the match because of their poor condition and were taken to the hospital while the match was in progress.
Cricket South Africa (CSA) released a statement confirming the hospitalisation of their players.
"With half of the squad going down ill overnight South Africa was forced to play (against India A today) an ill-balanced starting XI that had only four frontline bowlers with the likes of Dean Elgar and Khaya Zondo to make up the rest of the overs," said CSA.
"Reeza Hendricks, Zondo and Mthokozisi Shezi were all on the sick list but had to play because there was nobody else available but all three had to be hospitalised during the course of the match.
"The same applied to De Kock who was hospitalised after the match," the release said.
De Kock had been forced to play less than 24 hours after his arrival in India as six of his teammates were on the sick bed by the time he landed.
Due to the unavailability of the players, India A will now be playing South Africa A’s next match in the tri-series against Australia A.
"South Africa A were due to play Australia A tomorrow but in the circumstances (10 in hospital) this match has been put back to Tuesday," the CSA said.
The rescheduling was done at the behest of the South African A management team as at least six of their players were not fit to play. Rahul Dravid accepted the request and made the changes accordingly.
The crisis facing South Africa A was evident when India A’s 12th man Mandeep Singh came in to the field after de Kock suffered a hamstring pull while South Africa A’s video analyst Hendrikus Coertzen was seen fielding in place of left-arm seamer Mthokozisi Shezi, who fell ill.
