As part of its ongoing campaign to eradicate the spread of dengue, the Punjab Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) inspected 279 sites in different parts of the city. District official Mian Muhammad Nawaz on Friday said the agency had sealed 11 premises during inspections in the last week.
The EPA inspected areas at risk of being dengue breeding sites, including 144 tyre shops, 82 junkyards, 29 warehouses, eight plant nurseries and 16 construction sites. During their inspections, squads from the agency’s dengue directorate found 211 sites complaint with SOPs regarding dengue prevention and safety, while eradicating 68 breeding points in the city, Nawaz added. In addition, Deputy District Officer Dr Aamir Sheikh said teams had fumigated around 600 mosques in the Rawal Town area.
No case of dengue has been detected in Rawalpindi, according to District Health Officer Dr Rafiq Ahmad on Friday. He said an awareness campaign on preventive measures against the virus had been launched, adding that additional medical staff had been deployed at all hospitals to cope with dengue related cases.
Nawaz said he is monitoring the city-wide campaign through the ‘Punjab Government Dengue Online Android System’. He added that squads visiting various areas of the city update their progress including images and details using the software. He also urged the general public to cooperate with the government’s efforts during the campaign.
Meanwhile a seminar to create awareness among the people about dengue was held by the Rawalpindi Eye Donors Organisation. Speaking on the occasion, Nawaz said that 110 countries were affected by this virus. Dr Jamal Nasir said it is obligatory on everyone to participate in the ‘war against dengue’.
