Muttahida Qaumi Movement Gilgit-Baltistan leader Sayid Abid Iqbal resigned from the party. Talking to the media at the press club on Wednesday, Iqbal said he announced the resignation over party chief Altaf Hussain’s recent speech. “His recent statements against the armed forces prove he is working for the enemies,” he added. He urged all patriots within MQM to part ways with the party.
A resident of Chilas town, Iqbal is said to be the first MQM ticketholder from the region. He won the party its first seat from Shigar Valley of Baltistan during the 2009 Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly elections. He was serving as the Diamer zonal in-charge of the party.
On July 29, an anti-terrorism court in Gilgit issued non-bailable arrest warrants for Hussain for using derogatory language against Pakistan Army and the paramilitary forces. The decision was announced by judge Raja Shabab of ATC-I. The court became the first in the country to issue warrants for the MQM supremo.
