DERA GHAZI KHAN:

Around a dozen visually-impaired people staged a protest demonstration on Tuesday in Dera Ghazi Khan against the district administration for not providing them jobs.

The protesters gathered at Kutchery Chowk. They then took out a rally that ended outside the commissioner’s office. They staged a sit-in outside the office.

They said that the Punjab government had issued a notification, directing the district administrations to provide jobs to qualified visually-impaired people in their respective areas. However, they said, the Dera Ghazi Khan district administration had yet to implement the decision.

Hafiz Abdur Razzaq, one of the protesters, said that visually-impaired job seekers were being provided jobs in other districts. “The Dera Ghazi Khan district administration has not taken any steps to implement the decision taken by the government. We are still without jobs,” he said. The protesters were later invited by the district administration for negotiations.

Talking to The Express Tribune, a district government spokesman said that the protesters had agreed to stop their demonstration. “They held talks with the officials. We have issued recruitment letters to two of them. The rest will be provided jobs after the scrutiny of their educational degrees and other documents,” he said.

He said that Abdur Razzaq and Jaleel Ahmad had been appointed naib qasids in the Special Education Department on three year contracts.

He said that the Dera Ghazi Khan district administration had provided contract jobs to five visually-impaired people three months ago. “They have also been issued their salaries. However, they joined the protest demonstrations that were held in Lahore. Instructions have been issued once again to hire these people on a contract basis,” he said.
