KARACHI:
For the second time in a week, the infamous 'White Corolla rapist' and his aide were convicted by a district and sessions court in three robbery cases on Tuesday, signalling that the six-year-long trial against them is about to conclude.

Ali Hajiano, the alleged serial rapist who once remained a terror for women in the posh vicinities off the city's beaches, and his accomplice, Umair Khan, were handed down a collective imprisonment of 45 years and each was fined a sum of Rs75,000 in three cases pertaining to robbery — the same sentence they were awarded last Thursday. The sentences will run concurrently.

This is the sixth conviction in the 35 cases against the duo registered between 2008 and 2009. They, however, have been acquitted in a number of cases as the prosecution failed to muster enough evidence against the suspects to prove them guilty because most of the victims failed to appear before the court to testify against them. Yet around 10 cases are pending in the court, out of which, two are set to be decided in the following week.

The cases were registered against them by three DHA residents who, with their families, had fallen victim to the looting spree of the culprits. One of the complainants stated that he had gone out with his wife and as they reached their car, a White Corolla approached them. Two men armed emerged from the car and harassed them on gun point. The dacoits snatched the cash, cell phone and Rolex watch from the man and the purse his wife was carrying. They fled after robbing the family. The other cases were identical in contentions as the gang mostly operated in the same fashion.

The South district's additional sessions judge, Sikandar Ameer Pahore, who was recently appointed at the Judicial Complex court, pronounced his verdict after scrutinising the evidences put before him and hearing the final arguments from both the sides. They were sentenced to 15 years in imprisonment.

The judgment read that the complainant and witnesses had rightly picked out the accused during the identification parades conducted in the early days of the trial and also deposed against them before the court. The hearing of the cases took place inside Central Jail and, according to a source, Hajiano and Khan were seen in tears when the judge read out their conviction.

The duo was arrested in January 2009 and charged with murder, attempted murder, robbery and attempt to disgrace women. Though the gang was infamous for rapes, it has yet to be convicted for any such offence.
