SUKKUR:
A 15-year-old bloody dispute between the Jatoi and Jagirani tribes was settled amicably through a jirga held at Jatoi House, Shikarpur on Sunday night. A fine of Rs23.6 million was imposed upon the parties for killing 24 persons.
The jirga, chaired by the former Sindh minister Mir Manzoor Panhwar, was held at Jatoi House, which was attended by the former MNA Dr Muhammad Ibrahim Jatoi and a large number of Jatoi and Jagirani tribesmen. Jatoi tribesmen were represented by Muhammad Ibrahim Jatoi, Sardar Fatah Muhammad Jatoi and former MPA Abid Hussain Jatoi, while the Jagirani clan was represented by MPA Mir Abid Hussain Sundrani, Mir Rashid Hussain Sundrani and Farooq Ahmed Jagirani.
The jirga heard both the parties’ versions at length and recorded their statements, after which a long discussion took place between the president and ameens of the jirga. Later, Haji Karim Dino Jatoi read out the verdict. According to the verdict, Jagirani tribesmen were found guilty of killing 11 Jatoi tribesmen and a fine of Rs12.75 million was imposed on them, while the Jatoi clansmen were found guilty of killing 12 Jagirani tribesmen and were fined Rs10.07 million.
According to the decision of the jirga, both the clansmen will jointly pay Rs800,000 to the family of a Mahar tribesman, who was killed in the cross fire. The amount for each killed person was fixed at Rs800,000 and the compensation for the injured varied according to the severity. It was also decided that the compensation money will be paid directly to the families of the deceased and that the sardars of both the tribes will be responsible for ensuring it.
The jirga imposed a fine of Rs1.8 million upon the Jagirani tribesmen for killing Malh Pehlwan Ghulam Sarwar Jatoi. It was also decided that, in case of future aggression by one tribe against the other, a fine of Rs2 million will be imposed upon the aggressor. The Jatoi-Jagirani dispute started fifteen years ago in district Khairpur over a piece of land and then spread to Sukkur and Shikarpur. During that period, the areas under the influence of both the tribes remained no-go areas for each other and normal activities in those areas remained suspended due to the tribal war.
