Constant Vigilance: Security around prisons beefed up
The DIG said jail authorities had been directed to strengthen prison walls

The Prisons Department has beefed up security around jails in Lahore, DIG Prisons Malik Mubashar said on Saturday. Talking to newsmen during a visit to Camp Jail, he said instructions had been issued to officials of Kot Lakhpat and Camp Jails to beef up security and implement a new security plan as soon as possible. The DIG said jail authorities had been directed to strengthen prison walls. He said they had been told to monitor activity near the prisons through CCTV cameras. He said families of inmates should be thoroughly searched before they were allowed in. He said food being served to prisoners should be checked for quality. Camp Jail Superintendent Shahram Khan said that cell phone jammers had been installed in jails to prevent inmates from using unauthorised phones. He said two water filtration plants had been installed at the jai and two others would be set up at a cost of Rs2 million. He said summary in this regard had been sent to the government for approval. The superintendent said discussions and interviews of prisoners were recorded through a computer system to monitor activities of inmates. He said sitting areas with capacity of 200 visitors had been arranged for families of prisoners.
