PESHAWAR: United Municipal Workers (UMW) took to the streets on Friday over Minister for Local Government Inayatullah Khan’s failure to keep his promise to promote them. A large number of employees gathered outside Peshawar Press Club, carrying placards and shouting slogans against the LG minister. The protest was led by UMW Chairman Malik Muhammad Naveed.During the protest, some participants said employees from other departments had been promoted regardless of whether they had been hired on a permanent or contractual basis. However, the demands of municipal employees had fallen on deaf ears. Protesters have threatened to extend their protests if the local government minister and secretary are not removed from office immediately. They said protests will be held outside the local council office and Jamaat-e-Islami’s provincial headquarters, Al-Markaz-e-Islam, from August 4.
