Capital punishment: Five executed in Lahore, Rawalpindi
Five death-row convicts have been hanged in prisons of Lahore and Rawalpindi.
The three condemned prisoners Nadim Shahzad, Samar Jan and Muhammad Riaz were executed in Kot Lakhpat Jail Lahore. Nadim Shahzad and Samar Jan had been convicted in the kidnapping and murder case of a child in 1998 while Riaz had been convicted in the murder case of persons in the Shalimar area of Islamabad.
Separately two murder convicts were executed in Adiala Jail on Friday, jail authorities said. The executions were carried out after a local court issued the inmates’ death warrants. Zafar Iqbal and Muhammad Ashraf had been convicted by a local court in murder cases in 2000 and 2002 respectively.
Iqbal had been caught by the Mandra police while Ashraf was nabbed by the Wah police. The jail authorities had earlier arranged the last meetings of the convicts with their families before they were executed. As many as 200 death convicts have been executed since December 2014.
