Some 600,000 cusecs water is expected to pass by Dera Ghazi Khan at Taunsa and Guddu over the next two days in a high flood in River Indus. It will likely affect 67 villages of 15 union councils of the district.


Flood Focal Person Mehboob Ahmad told newsmen on behalf of DCO that machinery had been deployed at Head Gajani Super Bund to cope with any emergency.

He said residents of these villages had been moved to safe areas. He said 24,256 acres of standing crop had been inundated. He said 427 houses had been destroyed.

Ahmad said 12,800 people had been rescued by the district administration. Of these, he said, 6,000 had moved to 41 camps set up the district.

“We urge people to utilise the facilities at the relief camps,” he said. He said water, tents and medicines were available there.

Ahmed said 1,631 people had been provided medical aid and 106,692 cattle were vaccinated. He said fodder for 540 cattle had been distributed.

He said four mobile dispensaries were working with the relief camps. No casualties, human or cattle, was reported in the evacuation.

Ahmed said field teams were also guiding livestock owners on animal health.District Emergency Officer Natiq Hayat said Rescue 1122 had moved more than 500 families to safe places.  He said 16 teams of 670 rescue workers had been deployed.

He supervised rescue operation at Ghazi Ghat.

Hayat said six rescue teams had been deployed at Jhakkar Imam Shah, 10 at Haji Ghazi Sharqi and 18 at Dayo Chowk Taunsa.

He said 12 boats and two ambulances were available for shifting flood-affected people to safe locations.

School evacuation

The district administration of Multan on Wednesday issued directives to evacuate schools in flooded areas.

A spokesman of the district government said the Punjab government had ordered evacuation of 80 primary, middle and high schools in the area.

He said school materials would be moved to other buildings. He said 50 schools had been evacuated to house flood victims. DCO Zahid Saleem Gondal said evacuation of school buildings was being monitored.
