Unmistakably Mathira
Pakistan’s very own ‘naughty haseena’ gives a sneak peek into her upcoming projects and life in the fast lane
KARACHI:
“Ye awam kabhi bhi khush nahi hosakti,” says Mathira, without as much as a hint of inhibition in her claim. “When Jennifer Lopez and Beyoncé are doing dance numbers, people find them sexy. But God forbid, if a Pakistani girl does the same, she is deemed as vulgar,” she adds.
As shocking as they might be, one can’t refute Mathira’s assertions. After all, her experience of being at the heart of controversy countless times must’ve taught her something, if not propriety. The outspoken VJ-singer-actor speaks to The Express Tribune about the roller-coaster ride her career has been and, boy, does she have a lot to say.
Quenching her thirst to tread where most fear to tread, Mathira recently wrapped up shooting for two glamour songs, one of which, Butter Jawani, is an upbeat item number. She’ll also be seen in a small but fashionable role in Faisal Bukhari’s upcoming film Blind Love. In the meantime, the starlet is looking through television and film scripts to prove her acting skills. “If the team is good, then the budget doesn’t bug you too much. It becomes a secondary issue,” says Mathira, speaking about two unfulfilled Bollywood projects she has in the pipeline. “I got pregnant with my son, so didn’t end up doing them,” she shares. “The Indian directors were welcoming and really want me to do their future projects. Projects toh aate jaate rehte hain, but family always comes first.”
But convention isn’t one of her strong suits and Mathira doesn’t want it to be either. Apart from when she speaks about her son, she seems every bit the rebellious and free-spirited person Pakistan loves to hate, but can’t seem to get enough of. Cashing in on her somewhat confused followers, she has continued to cultivate a career in the local entertainment industry.
She debuted with an item number Masti Mein Doobi Raat Hai in the 2013 film Main Hoon Shahid Afridi and is set to release two singles of her own in the coming months. Jhoota part 2, a sequel to her 2014 hit Jhoota, is among the forthcoming releases. “This is a good one. Rather, a cute one,” she says. “We’ll have to see how it resonates with the audiences.” Naughty Haseena, a title that encapsulates Mathira near perfectly, is scheduled to be her second offering. She has also done a cameo in husband DJ Flint J’s upcoming video Ishq, to be released early next month.
On how she spend her Eid holidays this year, she excitedly shares, “Iss saal bari Eidi milli hai … Mere bete ko bhi mili hai, but sab meine rakhli. After all, I’m his legal guardian.” Both mommy and son Aahil seem to be doing great, the latter approaching his first birthday soon. “He has just started to crawl now and has four tiny teeth. Of course, he worries everyone, but we enjoy his company a lot,” she adds fondly, showing a glimpse of maternal love and conventionality.
