The tehsil’s lawyers went on strike before Eid when an additional sessions judge and a judicial magistrate rejected former MPA Advocate Abdul Majid Khan and former UC nazim Advocate Hazrat Ali’s bail before arrest. Both Majid and Ali are lawyers by profession and are facing charges of attesting NIC documents for Afghan nationals.
The protest has since continued and has now been extended to the entire district. The protesting legal practitioners have demanded the transfer of the aforementioned judicial officials.
SBA President Ahmad Ali Khan, General Secretary Sagheer Khan and Advocate Mohammad Rashid headed the association’s general body meeting held in Chota Lahor on Saturday. The attendees discussed the legal implications of the rejection of Majid and Ali’s bail before arrest. They were also briefed about contacts made with the Peshawar High Court through the high court bar association.
Following prolonged discussion, the attendees decided to boycott court proceedings in Chota Lahor completely.
Chota Lahor Bar Association General Secretary Advocate Tanveer Shehzad said the protest will continue until their demands were met. He said both the additional sessions judge and the judicial magistrate rejected applications of two senior legal practitioners in a civil case. “We are determined to uphold the independence of the judiciary and cordial relations between bench and bar.”
