LAHORE:

A Lahore High Court judge has recommended formation of a larger bench to hear petitions seeking prosecution of Altaf Hussain under treason charges.

During Friday’s hearing, the petitioner’s counsel Aftab Virk claimed that the interior and information ministries have failed to initiate action against the MQM supremo, despite his derogatory remarks against the integrity of the country and the army.

He said that Altaf’s speeches were tantamount to treason and appealed to the court to issue directives to the executive to lodge treason cases against the MQM leader and members of his immediate political coterie.

After hearing the arguments, Justice Mazhar Ali Akbar Naqvi observed that the case was of sensitive nature and should be heard by a larger bench of the court.

Subsequently, he sent the file to the LHC chief justice to form a larger bench. The court also issued notices to the interior ministry and the premier’s principal secretary.
