Stay out: Universities’ staff protest intrusion in appointments
The administrative staff of public-sector universities in Sindh have joined forces with the varsity teachers over the Sindh government's alleged intrusion in the appointment of BPS-20 registrars and controllers of examinations.
The Sindh Universities Officers Federation (SUOF) gave a deadline of July 30 to the provincial government to withdraw its advertisement of 16 posts of registrars and 18 of the controller of examinations.
A meeting, chaired by SUOF president Riyasat Ali Kubar in Hyderabad, warned of a protest movement from August 1 if their demand is not accepted. "We consider it a contemptuous move against the university syndicates [which previously made appointments on the two posts]," said Kubar, reiterating that the government seemed adamant on infringing on the autonomy of the higher education institutions. "If they go ahead, an administrative crisis will occur."
Kubar said that SUOF will attend the July 27 meeting of the Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association (Fapuasa) at Karachi University. The central and provincial representatives of Fapuasa and SUOF will also hold a joint press conference. The teachers associations of Sindh University, Mehran University of Engineering and Technology and Sindh Agriculture University held separate meetings on Thursday and Friday.
