Budding designer Maheen Ghani Taseer on launching debut luxury prêt and upcoming bridal collection
KARACHI:
When asked Maheen Ghani Taseer why she ventured into the fashion industry, she attributes it to her penchant for designing as though it were but natural for her to do so. “I have always loved fashion and styling. It was only recently that I decided to give shape to my passion,” said the fashionista, socialite and daughter-in-law of the late Salman Taseer, as she launches her first luxury prêt collection.
The awaited collection features stylish and contemporary eastern- and western-wear, offering everything from draped saris to elegant gowns. “My signature aesthetics are traditional,” said Maheen of her design philosophy. “I have used all sorts of fabrics to cater to my clientele. I love mixing materials and creating wholesome looks out of them.” According to Maheen, the quality of tailoring and material used by her team will set the clothes apart. “What makes my designs different would probably be the silhouettes and embellishments we use. The clothes are unique and people love to see something different.”
Unafraid to break the rules, Maheen has roped in journalist and her close friend Amal Khan as the model for MGT, claiming that the latter embodies everything the clothing line stands for. “MGT is for independent, working women who possess the will to achieve,” explains Maheen of her decision. “Amal is not only a dear friend and known personality but also stunning to look at. So, I had my sister Leena Ghani do her make-up and conducted a spontaneous, fun and candid photo shoot.”
Her namesake clothing line MGT was launched in Lahore last month, which garnered praise from fashionistas across the city. “I am so overwhelmed by the feedback I have received,” said Maheen. “I am extremely happy that my line has gotten such a great response. Everyone’s support means a lot and makes me want to do bigger and better things.”
The launch of MGT is only the beginning for the budding designer, whose sight is set on the top. Just two months into the business and Maheen is already showing signs of a promising future. “I do plan on opening a store sometime very soon,” she said. Maheen also credited news regarding the MGT bridal collection, revealing that she has already commenced working on it. “It will be our first big project in what I see MGT doing in the future,” said Maheen. “The bridal collection is very ethnic and vibrant, moving away from pastels and adding some colour. We hope to launch the line by September.”
The bridal collection will be a dedication from Maheen to her husband Shahbaz Taseer as he is the main inspiration behind the clothes. “I want those who wear my clothes to understand what struggle and overcoming adversity stands for. It truly defines who you are.”
