No celebrations were arranged in Swat to mark Malala Day, insiders told The Express Tribune.

Global Peace Council President Ahmad Shah said the occasion was celebrated in a tepid fashion by friends and relatives of Malala Yousafzai.

“No special celebrations were held because of Ramazan,” he said. “Moreover, most students in Swat are on summer holidays so nothing was planned at schools.”

Awami National Party Swat President Sher Shah Khan said Malala Day was not celebrated with fanfare due to Ramazan.

“This doesn’t change the fact that Malala is the daughter of Swat and we are proud of her,” he added.
