Melting glaciers: Water level rises in Chitral River
Due to the melting of glaciers and flooding of freshwater streams, a scarcity of drinking water has arisen
CHITRAL:
With the steady melting of 45 major glaciers in Broghal and Yarkhoon, the water level has risen significantly in Chitral River, causing flash floods in adjoining areas. Agricultural land in Kargan, Chaparri, Jinali Koch and Green Lasht villages has been inundated with river water. Residential areas in upper Chitral are equally at risk. “Due to the melting of glaciers and flooding of freshwater streams, a scarcity of drinking water has arisen in our village,” said Ali Sher Khan, a resident of Reshan. He said women now have to walk to far flung areas in search of potable water.
