SC seeks report on 2010 flood inquiry probe proposals

In order to meet the contingency and risk of flood, the apex court has directed the Federal Flood Commission (FFC) to hold its meeting on July 13 regarding the implementation of the recommendations made by the Commission on Flood Inquiry 2010.
The report of the first meeting shall be submitted to this court immediately for the perusal of the judges in chamber, says the order.
The three-judge bench of the apex court, headed by Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, on Thursday took up the hearing of contempt petition filed by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) MNA Marvi Memon against irrigation secretaries of Punjab and Sindh for committing contempt of court by not implementing the flood commission’s recommendations and neglecting to guard against possible destruction.
On petitions filed by Marvi and others, the flood commission was constituted on December 15, 2010 by the top court to investigate allegations of deliberate breaches in the Tori Bund and other dykes.
In July 2011, Marvi had moved a contempt petition against irrigation secretaries of Punjab and Sindh for not implementing the commission’s recommendations.
The court also asked the FFC to include the petitioner Marvi Memon as its member, who shall point out to the commission as to what recommendations of the SC’s commission on flood inquiry have been met or which are outstanding.
