Safta committee: Experts discuss tariff liberalization

Member countries appreciated the role of Pakistan for organising the meetings to promote trade in the region

ISLAMABAD:
The South Asian Free Trade Area (Safta) committee of experts met here on Thursday and discussed the rules of origin, tariff liberalisation, future vision of Safta and Saarc agreement on trade in services. A statement issued by the Ministry of Commerce said these meetings were originally scheduled to be held in Kathmandu, Nepal, however, due to the devastating earthquake there, Pakistan offered to host the meetings, so that the negotiation process could continue uninterrupted. Substantial progress was made on these issues. The meetings had also a special importance as these were held before the ninth meeting of Safta ministerial committee, which will be held in Kabul on August 5. Member countries appreciated the role of Pakistan for organising the meetings to promote trade in the region.
