Norwegian firm to set up three solar power plants in Pakistan

Power plants to generate 150MW. Pakistan also sought Norway’s cooperation on hydro-electric projects

A Norwegian company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a Pakistani company on Tuesday to establish three solar power plants in Pakistan, Radio Pakistan reported.

Nizam Energy of Sindh and Scatec Solar signed the MoU in Oslo on Tuesday to establish three solar plants to generate 150MW through clean energy in Pakistan.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his Norwegian counterpart Erna Solberg witnessed the signing ceremony.

In a meeting with the Norwegian premier, Nawaz discussed prospects for cooperation in energy and exchanged views on regional security situation, Afghanistan issue and Pakistan-India relations.

Addressing the joint press conference after a bilateral meeting with Solberg, Nawaz said that he had sought Norway’s cooperation on hydro-electric projects. He said Pakistan is facing acute power shortage and the government is trying to overcome it in next two, to three years.

Referring to the peace talks between Afghan government and Taliban, the premier expressed the hope that the talks would have some positive outcome which would be helpful for peace and stability in Afghanistan.

Nawaz is currently is on three-day official visit to Norway to attend the Oslo Summit on Education for Development.

SK | 9 years ago | Reply MOUs mean nothing- review trips by Pakistan's so many PM, CMs, FMs etc. and you will know they have signed thousands of MOU during their hundreds of trips then check to see how many of those MOUs were materialized. Only marketing stint

Shabeh Ul Hasson | 9 years ago | Reply ...And solar is not a cheaper renewable energy source particularly when 60000MW potential of hydro power is available in the country and additionally the wind energy potential - a cheapest renewable energy source, one should have clear plans in mind. Germany now a days meets 28% of its energy demands from renewable resources with wind energy as a dominating source.

Zain | 9 years ago | Reply The deal is between two private firms and the govt of Pakistan will be paying for the projects. Like all recent and past projects this will to be marred with kickbacks and corruption. Moreover expensive electricity will push the already over burdened consumers in Pakistan. The idea seems to be to make electricity so expensive that consumers do loadshedding on their own.

Kepler-8B | 9 years ago | Reply So much for Solar. I wonder how he is going to defend his failed education system in Oslo, where schools have become haunted house and the teachers have become ghost literally. The victims are our poor children who are stuck in this viscous cycle.
