FAISALABAD:
University of Agriculture (UAF) Vice Chancellor Iqrar Ahmad Khan said on Tuesday that 57 UAF students had been awarded Punjab Education Foundation (PEF) scholarships worth Rs2,601,620 since 2012.

He was speaking at a ceremony organised to distribute cheques for Rs1,080,000 among 18 students who have been awarded PEF scholarships for the academic year 2014-15. Each student has been awarded an Rs80,000 scholarship.

Khan praised the foundation for promoting education. He said education was the sole tool that enabled nations to prosper and develop. Khan said the UAF had been conceived as an educational institute devoted to the agriculture, rural development and food security sectors.

He said admissions to the varsity were made on a quota basis. Khan said special attention was paid to students hailing from rural areas in this regard. He said nearly 35 per cent of the varsity’s students had been awarded scholarships to enable them to complete their education. Khan said sponsoring gifted students from disadvantaged background would help foster positive social change in the long run.

UAF Financial Aid Director Hafeez Sadaqat said the varsity had been extending financial assistance to students from disadvantaged backgrounds in the form of scholarships, internships, work-study options and student loans. He said it had become increasingly difficult for the underprivileged to educate their offspring. Sadaqat said extending financial assistance to students from such backgrounds would enable them to continue their studies and promote social equality.
