PESHAWAR:
Chief Minister Pervez Khattak has directed the district administration of Upper Dir to submit a report on the losses caused by the thunderstorm and flash flood.
According to a handout issued by the CM Secretariat on Saturday, Khattak contacted the administration and the Malakand commissioner earlier in the day to ask for details on the nature of damage caused by the torrential rain and an estimate of the losses. He urged them to immediately submit a detailed report on the matter.
“The provincial government plans to compensate the victims with immediate effect,” read the handout.
It added that a three-member committee has already been constituted to assess the damage caused by the rainstorm. The committee comprises Jamaat-e-Islami MPA Muhammad Ali Shah, Upper Dir DC Imran Hameed Sheikh and Provincial Disaster Management Authority director general. Its findings will be submitted to the chief minister.
The handout added that the administration should restore the road network to make the region accessible.
Earlier, on Thursday, at least eight people, including children, were killed in the thunderstorm and flash flood. Two children were also reported missing. Seven houses, an Eid Gah and a seminary were swept away and 15 shops were damaged. There was hardly any equipment to conduct rescue efforts in the area, which remained largely inaccessible as the roads were blocked due to landslides.
Following heavy rain and floods in Upper Dir, the provincial government said it would compensate the families of victims once the district administration provides it with an estimate of losses.
