FAISALABAD:
A constable from Mansoorabad police station deputed to keep an eye on a suspect in a robbery case was detained and beaten up by residents of Sufian Town on Wednesday.
He was rescued by a police team after several hours of negotiations with the residents.
Later, police registered a case against nine people for detaining and assaulting a constable on official duty. Scores of residents staged a demonstration against police after the FIR was registered.
The protesters gathered at Sheikhupura Road and blocked it for traffic. They chanted slogans against Mansoorabad police and said the FIR should be cancelled.
The Sargodha Road ASP and the Millat Town SHO met the protesters and assured them that the matter would be looked into. The protesters dispersed on their assurance.
Talking to The Express Tribune, Mansoorabad SHO Saeed Ahmad Baloch said Constable Muhammad Boota had been assigned to keep an eye on Amir, a resident of Sufian Town. He said the man was believed to be a member of a robbery gang and was wanted over his involvement in several robberies.
He said on Wednesday, Amir and his accomplices Nasir, Waheed and Faqeer Hussain had detained him when he went to the neighbourhood. “They beat him for several hours and would not let him go,” he said.
He said Boota had called them for help.
“I took a team and rushed to the neighbourhood,” he said. He said the constable was rescued after a few hours. He said he had been taken to Allied Hospital for treatment.
