FAISALABAD: Scores of factory workers on Monday staged a protest demonstration against shortage of doctors at Chiniot DHQ Hospital.

The protesters, led by Chiniot Mazdoor Mahaz, marched to the DCO’s office and staged a sit-in there.

Holding banners and placards, they chanted slogans against the Health Department for failing to provide child specialists, surgeons and anaesthetists at the hospital.

Addressing the workers, Mazdoor Mahaz provincial general secretary Ali Amin said workers who visited the DHQ hospital in Chiniot were often referred to other hospitals on account of a shortage of staff.

He said injured workers often had to travel long distances for medical aid.

“Emergency patients taken to the DHQ hospital often have to be taken to Allied Hospital because there are not enough doctors here,” he said.

The protesters chanted slogans and demanded immediate appointment of physicians, surgeons, anaesthetists and paramedical staff at the hospital.

They appealed to the chief minister to take notice of the situation and issue funds to upgrade the hospital.

On being informed, a representative of the DCO’s office met the protesters and assured them that the issue would be taken up by senior officials and resolved.  The protesters dispersed on receiving this assurance.
