A tough selection criteria for technocrat seats in the new Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) government has disappointed many aspirants who had submitted their applications for the slots.
Speaking to The Express Tribune on Monday, Habib Rehman, a spokesperson of the regional secretariat of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz, said under the G-B Empowerment and Self-governance Order 2009, three technocrat seats must be occupied by men while six seats will be reserved for women. Technocrats must have a master’s degree and over 15 years of experience.
“The criteria are strict,” he said. “The requirements have disappointed many who had submitted their applications.”
The spokesperson said most of the party’s workers who have been associated with it for many years do not fulfil these criteria. “As a result, many of our workers cannot be appointed to these seats,” he said.
Furthermore, Rehman said the selection criteria have deprived many young people of being eligible for these seats.

According to the spokesperson, since PML-N unofficially grabbed over half the number of seats in the June 8 G-B elections, it is eligible to nominate a large number of technocrats and candidates for women seats.
“However, the number of applications received by PML-N is larger than the number of seats,” he added. “At least 24 men and 20 women have applied.”
Their fate will be decided once Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who is also the party chief, gives a nod of approval.
A meeting was held in Islamabad on Monday between the prime minister and PML-N regional chief Hafeezur Rehman to discuss the formation of the new government and decide who will become the chief minister, speaker and deputy speaker. The party’s regional chief arrived in Islamabad a day earlier after he was summoned by Nawaz to discuss the fate of the new regional government.
