KARACHI:
Ahead of the local government elections scheduled for September in Sindh, the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) is planning to consolidate its vote bank.
The party will take part in the elections as part of a new spirit of working for the city, said JI Karachi division spokesperson Zahid Askari. The party will also hold a workers' convention and is planning to organise rallies in each district and a huge jalsa in the month of September.
"We have advised our workers to highlight the issues they are facing," he said. "We will try to solve their issues once elected."
Talking about the distribution of party tickets to interested candidates, Askari said their 'shura' will select them, based on their previous performance. The names of the final candidates will be announced after the delimitation of constituencies.
Askari termed his party as a force of change for the city. The people of Karachi must take their issues seriously, he said. "The people of Karachi should refrain from doing politics based on language as the condition of Karachi is very serious now," he added.
Askari confirmed to The Express Tribune that the party's ameer, Sirajul Haq, will lead their local bodies' election campaign. "He will visit Karachi before the month of September to run an effective campaign."
On the formation of alliances, Askari said it is possible. "The central board of the party will decide if the JI will fall into an alliance with any other party." He said the JI is a national-level party and the party focuses on a working environment with the other political forces of the city.
