KARACHI:

More than 565 motorcyclists lost their lives last year due to head injuries sustained during road accidents said Dr Raza Rizvi, the senior surgeon at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.

In the year 2014, 18,000 accidents involving motorcycles were reported and these led to a high incidence of injuries among the victims, which affected their lives he said.

Dr Rizvi urged the need for motorcyclists to become aware of their responsibility towards their personal safety as well as that of others. He expressed his support for the campaign undertaken by Karachi Traffic Police which has made the use of helmets mandatory for motorcyclists.

Research shows that more than 1,000 motorcyclists have died of head injuries in the past four years. He added that the overall age ratio of those injured or those who lost their lives was between 13 to 39 years. These deaths could have been avoided had the motorcyclists taken necessary precaution, he added.
