ISLAMABAD:
Delegates from Pakistan and Afghanistan delegates called for continuity of the dialogue process at the end of the first round of the Pakistan-Afghanistan bilateral discussion held in Islamabad on June 7-8, 2015.

The bilateral discourse was held under the umbrella theme of “Consolidating the Gains: Exploring Avenue and Methodologies to Pursue Joint Objective” and continued for two days. It was organised by Regional Peace Institute (RPI) of Pakistan in collaboration with Afghanistan Institute of Strategic Studies (AISS).

The event was sponsored by Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF) — an organisation that works for democracy, peace and development in Germany as well as out of the country.

AISS head Dr Daud Moradian while replying to a question said President Ashraf Ghani had taken courageous steps and his whole political career was on the line in case he failed, but he termed the Pakistan establishment responsible for not taking reciprocate steps, and said only rhetorical statements were coming from Islamabad.

Earlier, an RPI representative gave details about the event and said there were two working sessions held on the sub-themes of “Political and security dynamics, laying sustainable foundations and fighting terror, the lynchpin of bilateral resolve.”

An open session was held on June 8 on the sub-theme of “The heart of Asia Dialogue, Debating the Istanbul process and expansion of business, trade and cultural connectivity between Pakistan and Afghanistan.” This session was presided over by the Prime Minister’s National Security and Foreign Affairs Adviser Sartaj Aziz.

He said all these sessions were marked by a candid exchange of views resulting in mutual agreement to remain cognizant of differences and work towards finding viable and sustainable solutions.

It was mutually agreed to structure the dialogue process, and to facilitate this it was decided to constitute working groups which will submit their recommendations at the next round of bilateral dialogue in respect of trade and economic cooperation, socio-cultural cooperation and security and counter terrorism measures. The Afghan delegation expressed appreciation for the RPI who initiated the bilateral dialogue process and Government of Pakistan for facilitating it.

It was agreed to continue the dialogue process and to hold the next round in Afghanistan later this year.
