Lyari gangsters’ wives want to visit their husbands in prison
The women approach the SHC after being forbidden to meet their spouses by jail officials.
KARACHI:
The Sindh High Court adjourned till December 20 the hearing of a constitutional petition filed by the wives of alleged Lyari gangsters, who were told they could not meet their husbands in prison.
The petitioner, Neelo, cited Sindh home secretary, IG prisons, superintendent Nusrat Mangan and deputy Superintendent Raja Mumtaz of Karachi Central Prison as respondents.
She said that her husband, Haji Lal alias Lalu, and son, Arshad Pappu, were incarcerated in 2003 and 2006 respectively. Both were kept in solitary confinement for a long time. On October 23, she and Arshad Pappu’s wife went to the Central Prison to see their husbands but were not allowed to meet them by superintendent Mangan and deputy superintendent Mumtaz.
Later, jail officials told them that both men were in solitary confinement. Neelo said that now the officials were saying that both prisoners were transferred to Hyderabad prison from Karachi. There was no reason for shifting them to another city as the cases against them had been pending for a long time in the court of an additional district and sessions judge, South-IV at Karachi.
The petitioner asked the court to direct jail authorities to allow the wives of Haji Lal and Arshad Pappu to see them in prison and to move them from solitary confinement. She also prayed to order jail authorities to transfer both prisoners back to Karachi.
On Tuesday, assistant jail superintendent Imdad Mirza submitted a statement stating that both under-trial prisoners were kept in solitary confinement as punishment for seven days and had been taken out from it. Haji Lal, who was shifted to Sukkur Central Prison-I, was transferred back to Karachi’s Malir District Jail.
Petitioner’s counsel requested the court to direct jail authorities to allow Pappu’s wife to meet him in Karachi Central Jail. He also sought time to examine the statement filed by the assistant jail superintendent.
The SHC division bench allowed the request and adjourned hearing.
