Doctors seek funds for training

Only 42 candidates were selected out of 250 promised seats.

PESHAWAR:
Young doctors of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) have demanded immediate release of funds for FCPS-II training. The demand was made at a news conference by Dr Muhammad Shah Bangash at the Peshawar Press Club (PPC) on Monday.

He said that the young doctors of K-P were promised 250 seats for FCPS-II training for the year in the annual budget for 2010-11, which was also mentioned in the prospectus of Post-Graduate Medical Institute (PGMI). He said that 322 candidates were awaiting training through PGMI for the last year, but the provincial government selected only 42 doctors for training. “The remaining 280 candidates were deprived of their right,” he claimed.

Dr Bangash said that according to the rules of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP), the institute that supervises FCPS examinations, candidates cannot register for the FCPS-II training after January. Once the deadline passes, candidates have to wait for a year. Due to the delaying tactics in providing training, doctors will be unable to take FCPS-I examinations as well.

He said that about 2,000 doctors passed their MBBS examination from different medical colleges of K-P, out of which around 1,000 doctors take the FCPS-I exam. Only 250 to 300 candidates qualify FCPS-I, after which they are eligible for FCPS-II examination. Such candidates are given training in verified institutions of CPSP.

PGMI dean has written five letters to the Secretary Health but no action has been taken to resolve the problem, he said.

He demanded K-P Chief Minister and Provincial Minister for Health Syed Zahir Ali Shah to release funds for the already sanctioned seats for FCPS-II examination.

He warned that doctors will stage protests if their demands are not met.
