TB survey, control guidelines launched

National TB Prevalence Survey was launched.

ISLAMABAD:
To determine the exact number of tuberculosis (TB) patients in the country, National TB Prevalence Survey was launched on Monday.

On the occasion, National TB Infection Control Guidelines were also launched aimed at the implementation of infection control measures countrywide.

The launching ceremony was held at a local hotel. Federal Minister for Health Makhdoom Shahabuddin,  Deputy Chief of Mission, US Embassy, Stephen C Engelken, National Manager TB Control Programme Dr Noor Ahmed Baloch, officials of the Ministry of Health and representatives of civil society were present on the occasion.

USAID has funded $ 5 million under its Tuberculosis Control Assistance Programme (TBCAP) for the survey.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Noor Baloch said the survey will help the Ministry of Health to determine the number of TB patients in the country so they could be provided treatment well on time.

“This survey will help us achieve our target of making Pakistan a TB free country by 2015,” he said.

He said this could only be possible if government, health authorities, healthcare workers and hospital managements work collectively with full commitment.

Pakistan ranks at number 8 in 22 “high burden” countries of TB and 6 among 27 countries for Multi Drug Resistance, limited infection control activities and transmission of TB.

“Risk of transmission of TB in the community and health care setting is a big challenge in the way for the eradication of this disease,” he said.

Dr Baloch said 133,000 adult subjects will be included in the sampling frames for the survey

Speaking on the occasion, Federal Minister for Health said, “Our endeavor for TB control today is actually an investment in the future so that the coming generations can breathe in an air free of TB.”

Stephen C Engelken said the US Government strongly believes that investment in health leading to improved quality of life ultimately results in the economic growth of the country.

The speakers urged the media to play an effective role in creating awareness about the disease and overcoming the increasing number of patients in the country.
