KARACHI:

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Wednesday sentenced a man to 14 years in jail after convicting him for possessing explosive material and spreading terror.

According to the prosecution, Muhammad Ajmal was arrested during a raid in Jamshed Quarters in March 2014 and a pistol as well as a bag full of aluminium powder, nuts and bolts were seized from him. The charge-sheet stated that the police had received information that Ajmal was planning a terrorist activity in the city. An FIR was registered at the Jamshed Quarters police station under Sections 4 and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act read with Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA).

The case was heard at length in ATC-I before being transferred to the newly-established ATC-VI. Four witnesses, all of whom were policemen, testified against the suspect. Ajmal repeatedly contended that he was falsely implicated.

ATC-VI judge Abdul Naeem Memon observed that the prosecution had established its case against Ajmal beyond any shadow of doubt. He convicted Ajmal under the ATA and ordered the forfeiture of his property. The convict was also directed to pay a fine of Rs30,000.
