LAHORE:

Police stayed away from courts and refused to produce under-trial suspects in district courts on Tuesday.

Only a few police officials were seen present at the courts as many policemen continued to protest against the lawyers’ conduct following the May 25 riots in Daska.

The lawyers’ protests came in the wake of the killing of Daska Bar Association president Rana Khalid Abbas and Advocate Irfan Chauhan on May 25 in a clash with police.

Two lawyers – Jahanzeb Sahi and Samiullah Malhi – were injured in the shooting.

Only a few policemen, some of them in plainclothes, were seen at the main gate of district courts on Tuesday.

Judicial lockups were closed as no prisoners were brought from jails for court proceedings.

Fewer litigants came to courts apparently owing to sit-ins staged by lawyers against the Daska violence.
