Mines and minerals minister chairs first meeting of reforms committee

LAHORE: Minister for Mines and Minerals Sher Ali Khan said on Tuesday the government was doing its best to revamp the department and pave the way for more foreign investment.

He was chairing the maiden meeting of a steering committee formed by Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif for restructuring the department. Finance Minister Ayesha Ghaus Pasha, MPA Nazar Hussain Gondal, the additional chief secretary, the Planning and Development Board chairman and mines and minerals, law, finance, industries and regulations secretaries are members of the committee.

Briefing the meeting, Mines and Minerals Secretary Arshad Mahmood said that reorganisation of the department had become inevitable following the discovery of iron and copper ores in Chiniot-Rajwa. He said an inter-provincial workshop would be arranged to seek suggestions on restructuring the department.

Mahmood said the government would introduce semi-mechanised mining techniques to get desired results.

Terms of reference for the committee include preparation and presentation of a plan for a smooth transition of the department from its current mode to the company mode. The committee has been tasked with giving recommendations for the capacity building at the department.

Vaccination

Special Assistant to Chief Minister on Livestock and Dairy Development Chaudhry Arshad Jutt on Tuesday inaugurated the Carpet Vaccination Campaign Phase II at the Civil Veterinary Hospital, Harbanspura.

He said four teams had been formed to vaccinate animals and birds during the campaign. He said buffalos, cows and birds would be vaccinated against various diseases.

Additional Principal Veterinary Officer Muhammad Zubair Bari said the campaign had been started in four union councils of Gowala Colony, Harbunspura; Gowala Colony, Rakh Chandra; Padhana Border Area and Jallo Border.

The Lahore livestock officer asked team leaders to pursue the campaign wholeheartedly and ensure reporting on a daily basis.
