ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has refurbished its sanitation fleet by inducting a number of new and renovated vehicles.

The new fleet consists of 13 garbage compactors, 11 skip lifters, six dump trucks, six mechanical sweepers, 20 tractor trolleys and eight bucket-tractors.

“The new machinery will help cope with the ever-increasing sanitation needs of the city,” CDA Chairman Maroof Afzal said while inspecting the sanitation fleet at Jinnah Convention Centre on Tuesday.

CDA Environment Member Mustafain Kazmi informed the gathering that previously, only four waste compactors, two skip lifters, six dump trucks, and two mechanical sweepers were available in the sanitation fleet.

“The sanitation wing is now able to efficiently carry out routine cleaning activities. It will improve performance in terms of waste collection and disposal at designated sites,” Kazmi added.

The chairman was also briefed that a majority of the newly-inducted vehicles were declared redundant or not roadworthy by other CDA directorates.

They would have been auctioned, Kazmi said, adding that after repairs, maintenance and refurbishment at nominal cost, they have been made operational.

Each new vehicle would have its own serial number and awareness slogans would be embossed on them. In addition to effective monitoring, biometric attendance of sanitation staff was also being ensured, while proper uniforms have been declared mandatory for sanitation staff.

The addition of new mechanical sweepers will help expand mechanical road sweeping operations to sectors G-6, G-7, G-8, G-9, G-10 and I-10.
