Trend File: ‘Dress over pants’ rings a bell

It seems the rest of the world has finally caught up on the shalwar kameez trend

It seems the rest of the world has finally caught up on the shalwar kameez trend. Fashion bloggers, stylists and prominent members of the fashion industry are all talking about the ‘dress over pants’ trend, which Pakistanis have been sporting for as long as we can remember. Although many would think it’s odd to wear a dress over pants, one of this season’s biggest trends is quirky, comfortable and easy to master in the right fabric and cut. Many western designers have drawn inspiration from the traditional Pakistani outfit and used it in their designs, which have graced runways for spring/summer fashion trends. Celebrities have taken a liking to the outfit, which can be worn as matching separates, in monochrome or with bright, bold patterns.

Brief history of shalwar kameez

The apparel dates back to the times of the Mughal Empire and a kameez can be defined as a long tunic worn over the shalwar. The traditional attire makes for a popular ensemble for day-to-day wear as well as for formal events, including weddings. Various fabrics, such as cotton, georgette, chiffon, silk and, more recently, a fusion of different fabrics can be used to make the two-piece ensemble. Shalwar kameez has evolved over the years to pave way for new styles and variations.

Kendall Jenner

Although known to wear figure-hugging outfits that reveal her toned body and legs, Jenner wore the dress over pants in a recent public appearance. With just her arms showing, she managed to look effortlessly chic.

Emma Watson

She opted for this trend for the Golden Globe Awards earlier this year as she donned a floor-length Christian Dior dress paired with black pants.

Julie Delpy:

The actor wore a black tunic paired with pants at the premiere of Avengers: Age of Ultron, bringing out the essence of ‘dress over pants’ on the red carpet.

Sarah Jessica Parker:

She was spotted donning the ‘dress over pants’, while filming in Rome. She perfectly played with the tonal dressing.
