3 policemen killed in Karachi
The bodies of the slain policemen were identified as Sub Inspector Sikandar and Head Constables Asif and Ashraf
KARACHI:
Three policemen – including an inspector – were killed in a targeted gun attack in the Azizabad neighbourhood of the metropolis on Wednesday.
Around 6:30am three policemen were patrolling the Bangoria Road locality in their mobile van when two armed motorcyclists shot them at point blank range, according to witnesses. The gunmen also collected the official weapons of the slain policemen before fleeing the scene unidentified and unchallenged.
“The policemen were asleep in their van at the time of the attack,” said Amanat Ali, a resident of the area. “They [policemen] routinely parked their van at this spot and stole a nap.” District Central SSP Chaudhry Asad, however, said the policemen were not asleep.
Police investigators have obtained footage from the close circuit television cameras installed near the crime scene but could not find any clue. “We’re trying to ascertain how the attack took place,” said SP Tahir Noorani.
The bodies of the slain policemen – identified as Sub Inspector Sikandar and Head Constables Asif and Ashraf – were driven to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for autopsies where medics said all the victims were shot multiple times in the head, face and chest.
A Rangers and police contingent detained nearly a dozen suspects in a search operation launched following the attack and shifted them to an undisclosed location for questioning. Police officials said 9mm pistols were used by the attackers.
