No Coronary Care Unit at General Hospital
Every week patients are referred to Punjab Institute of Cardiology.
LAHORE:
The Young Doctors Association (YDA) on Sunday condemned the Lahore General Hospital (LGH) authorities for not pressuring the government for the establishment of a Coronary Care Unit (CCU) at the hospital.
A press release issued by the YDA stated that the lack of a CCU in the LGH not only created problems for the cardiac patients but also deprived young doctors of training and experience in cardiology.
Dozens of cardiac patients, it said, had to be referred to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) every week. The YDA office bearers said that Dr Tariq Salahuddin, the Post Graduate Medical Institute (PGMI) principal, was responsible for the lack of angiography equipment. They said said Dr Salahuddin had shown no interest in treating the cardiac patients at the LGH and automatically recommended them to PIC.
“Dr Salahuddin has been busy developing a personal rapport with the chief minister and the health secretary,” an office bearer of the YDA alleged. The YDA demanded that the principal should make serious efforts for getting a CCU sanctioned for the LGH. The YDA also requested the chief minister to direct the authorities concerned to take steps for the establishment of a 10-bed CCU at the LGH. They said that the young doctors at the LGH had approached the YDA several times, complaining that they were unable to get their cardiology training due to the lack of a CCU. Dr Salahuddin was not immediately available for his comments. The YDA leaders pushing for the CCU were Dr Rana Sohail, Dr Salman Kazmi, Dr Talha Sherwani, Dr Aurangzaib, Dr Aslam Rao, Dr Khuda Bakhsh, Dr Kamran, Dr Khalid Idrees.
