Sohail wins 4-1 to advance to knockouts
All three Pakistani cueists advance in World Championship.
KARACHI:
Sohail Shahzad joined Imran Shahzad and Mohammad Sajjad in the last-32 of the IBSF World Amateur Snooker Championship held in Damascus after defeating local cueist Anasal Marzouki 4-1.
Sohail took the lead by winning the first two frames 61-57 and 76-04 but the Syrian hit back in the third to win it 35-59. However, Sohail doubled his lead again, winning the fourth frame 65-02 and sealed his progress with a 54-40 win in the fifth frame.
In the next match, Pakistan’s number two will face Thailand’s Noppadol Sangnil, who defeated Sajjad 4-2 in the group stages.
“Thai cueists are usually very tough to play against,” Sohail told The Express Tribune. “This is my first appearance in the tournament so I’m definitely targeting the quarter-finals. However, going against Thai and English opponents is a little nerve-wrecking every time.”
Meanwhile, Sajjad will be up against Thailand’s Dechawat Poonjeang and Imran will take on Austria’s Andreas Ploner in the next round. Imran defeated Scotland’s Bobby Cruickshanks 4-2 and Sajjad beat New Zealand’s Garry Gillard 4-3 to move into the last-32.
