The change is here: ‘Interim PTI leadership will help overcome internal rifts’
PTI’s new Punjab organiser says mistakes in selection of candidates for Cantt polls will be avoided in future
LAHORE:
The Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf’s interim administration in the province will try and overcome differences within the party ranks, PTI Punjab chief organiser Chaudhry Sarwar told The Express Tribune on Saturday.
Sarwar said he aspired to work in consultation with all party members. “We have to overcome all differences within the party if we are to succeed in our mission to transform the country,” he said.
PTI chief Imran Khan had dissolved all offices in the party on Saturday in view of Justice (retd) Wajihuddin Ahmed’s report on irregularities during an intra-party election. Khan had also announced establishment of an interim setup under which Sarwar was made the chief organiser in the Punjab. Rai Azizullah, a senior member, was made the deputy organiser.
Sarwar told The Tribune that interim bodies would soon be set up at district, tehsil and union council levels. He said advisory teams that would work with organisers and deputy organisers would also be set up.
“The party realises that mistakes have been made in selection of candidates for the Cantonment elections. We will learn from our mistakes and move forward,” he said.
He said reorganisation would help prevent such a scenario in the upcoming local elections.
In Lahore, the PTI had managed to win only five of the 20 seats, 10 each in the Lahore and Walton Cantonment Boards.
Following the election, a two-member committee, with Sarwar as in charge, was formed by the PTI chief to hold an inquiry into the poor performance of the party. However, on his return to the country from England last week, Sarwar excused himself from the responsibility on grounds that he was a new member and there were other senior members better suited for the job.
Responding to the current status of the intraparty inquiry, Sarwar said the party chief would now decide how to proceed with the matter.
Sarwar also commented on the role of the Election Commission in the upcoming election. “The ECP should be more vigilant to ensure that the elections are free and fair,” he said.
He said the government should not be allowed to announce development works ahead of the elections. “This is unacceptable in a democratic society,” he said. He said he hoped the government would discipline itself and not indulge in such practices before local elections.
