The execution of a murder convict was stopped after heirs of the deceased agreed to a settlement on Saturday.
The Faisalabad District Jail superintendent said Muhammad Saleem had shot dead his cousin Liaqat in D-Type Colony on April 8, 2004. He said a court had sentenced him to death.
The jail SP said appeals to Lahore High Court, the Supreme Court and the president had been rejected.
He said Saleem was scheduled to be hanged on May 23. He said arrangements for the execution had been completed when his relatives struck a compromise with the heirs of the deceased. He said some 20 relatives had come to see him on Friday evening for a final meeting. He said Saleem had asked them to pay Rs5 million to heirs of the deceased and asked for forgiveness.
The jail SP said Saleem had been 25 when he killed his cousin. He said the man was housed at Sialkot District Jail for 10 years.
