Second chance: AIOU educating prisoners

The Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) is implementing a novel project focusing on providing free education to prisoners, enabling them to become useful citizens of the society after completing their prison terms.  



A senior official of the university informed that currently, more than 200 prisoners were enrolled with the university.


The university is also arranging examination for such persons within the jail premises.


The AIOU is focusing on promoting knowledge, skill and good behavior among its prison students.


The university also provides education to those who cannot afford educational expenses due to their particularly circumstances.


The university has also allocated a fund of Rs7 million for the education of displaced persons from North Waziristan. Besides fee remission, the university also provided books to children of IDPs. The university also allocated Rs20 million for flood victims, so that students residing in the affected regions do not face any hurdle in continuing their studies.
