PESHAWAR:
The rules of business for local government are in the process of being formulated and would be finalised before the establishment of the district council set-up, said Minister for LG Inayatullah Khan on Thursday.

While addressing the media at University of Peshawar, Khan said the 11-member local government commission has nearly completed its work on formulating the rules of business, by-laws, guidelines and code of conduct for district, town and tehsil councils, and will soon seek approval from the provincial cabinet.

According to Khan, after the LG set-up comes into effect, the commission would evaluate the implementation of LG Act and smooth devolution of powers, and will also monitor activities of the district, town and village and neighbourhood councils.

The commission is chaired by the LG minister, while its members include Minister for Health Shahram Tarakai, Minister for Education Atif Khan, Minister for Finance Muzaffar Said as well as several secretaries.

Khan said the commission has been meeting regularly to form the rules of business for local bodies’ set-up. “The committee will submit a comprehensive report to the chief minister by June 3,” he said.

Talking about the security plan for election day, Khan said hundreds of polling stations have been declared sensitive.  He added the security forces would be on call to assist in security, however, they would not be on duty inside polling stations.

“Personnel from Pakistan Army, Frontier Constabulary, Frontier Corps and policemen from other provi            nces would also be deployed,” he said.  According to Khan, the chief minister has instructed DCs to review the list of sensitive polling stations and ensure adequate security.

“Ballot paper printing has been completed and it will be the responsibility of the security forces to deliver the papers to polling stations,” Khan said. He added there are 13,035,699 registered voters in the province and over 3,000 polling stations have been set up for them.

Khan urged voters to exercise their constitutional duty on May 30 to ensure they get their rights.
