The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has finalised arrangements for by-elections in Multan’s PP-196 constituency to be held on Thursday (today).


The seat became vacant when Chaudhry Abdul Waheed Arain was disqualified by an election tribunal over possession of two CNICs.

Polling will begin at 8am and end at 5pm. There are some 178,000 registered voters in the constituency. As many as 133 polling stations have been set up and election materials distributed. As many as 66 polling stations have be designated for women.

As many as 14 candidates are contesting in the by-polls. Of these, there are seven independent candidates.



Rana Abdul Jabbar will contest the election on Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s ticket. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz has fielded Rana Mehmoodul Hassan, a former national assembly member. The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) awarded a ticket to Muhammad Hussain Arain. General (r) Pervez Musharraf from All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) nominated Habib Ahmed Ansari.

Multan Corps Commander Lt General Ashfaq Nadeem Ahmed reviewed the security arrangements for the by-polls on Wednesday.


He said Pakistan Army was ready to assist the civil administration in case of an emergency.

Police have set up a control room at the CPO’s office where a DSP will monitor security arrangements.

The district government has announced a public holiday on account of the by-election. DCO Zahid Salim Gondal said all education institutions would remain closed.

Some 3,000 policemen have been deployed for security. As many as 41 polling stations have been declared sensitive. A special control room has been set up at Police Lines to monitor election activities near those polling stations.

Talking to newsmen, Operations SSP Muhammad Salim said police from Jalilabad, Qutabpur, Shah Shamas, Mumtazabad, Haram Gate and Seetal Mari had been deployed for security.

He said the constituency had been divided into three zones. He said an SP would monitor security in each zone.

He said teams for a tear gas squad, special investigation team, ladies staff and reserve police had also been constituted.

He said another control room had been set up to ensure smooth flow of traffic.

He said DSP Legal Bashir Hussein Hashmi would be in-charge of traffic control.
