LAHORE:
Governor Rafique Rajwana said on Sunday that the legal community had always taken the lead in striving for the continuation of democracy and resisting autocratic forces.
He was speaking to a seventeen-member delegation of the Multan High Court Bar Association at the Governor’s House. “The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and lawyers share a common vision with regard to protecting the supremacy of the Constitution, freedom of judiciary and strengthening democracy,” Rajwana said. He said the PML-N had set an exemplary precedent by nominating an ordinary party worker hailing from the legal community to one of the most prestigious posts in the nation.
Rajwana said an ideal society was one where justice was prevalent, pleas of the innocent were heard and impartiality was the norm. He said the provision of timely justice to the people must be ensured. Rajwana said lawyers had to play a pivotal role in this regard.
The governor appreciated lawyers’ efforts to protect the supremacy of the Constitution and counselled bar associations to collaborate with the government to make democracy effective.
He said support of bar associations would provide succour to the people who had been anxiously waiting for far-reaching reforms to be introduced to the judicial system. Rajwana said the provision of speedy justice was a formidable challenge that had to be collectively overcome. He said the government thought that the services of the legal community were commendable and had been striving for lawyers’ welfare.
