Army chief hails intelligence agencies' achievements

During visit to ISI HQ, Gen Raheel emphasises need for proactive role of intelligence agencies to counter terrorism

Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif heaped praise for the country's intelligence agencies during a visit to the Inter-Services intelligence headquarters on Friday.

The army chief said most of the achievements and successes of intelligence agencies went unnoticed, but their accomplishments for the country’s defence were phenomenal, and deserved recognition and acknowledgement, according to an ISPR statement.

The army chief went on to emphasise the need for a more proactive and coordinated role of intelligence agencies for an effective counter-terrorism campaign, and to counter hostile agencies’ moves to destabilise Pakistan.

He stressed the need to further coordinate and synergise a combined civil-military intelligence effort on a national level by providing requisite support to the intelligence agencies, and developing modern intelligence techniques.

When briefed on preempting a number of terrorist acts and successful intelligence-based operations (IBOs), General Raheel appreciated the ISI’s role in preventing numerous terrorist acts in the country.

The army chief was briefed by DG ISI Lt General Rizwan Akhtar on the internal and external security situation of the country, and continuing counter terrorism operations.
