Homecoming: Sukkur resident returns after 5 months of captivity
Memon, a worker at a sugar mill, was kidnapped near Khairpur on December 8 last year.
SUKKUR:
A Sukkur resident who was kidnapped in December last year returned home safely on Wednesday after spending nearly five months in captivity.
Asif Muneer Memon, who used to work at a sugar mill, was on his way to Shahpur Jahania on December 8, 2014, when his car was intercepted near Kumb district in Khairpur. A group of armed men kidnapped him at gunpoint.
Memon's younger brother, Wasif Muneer, told The Express Tribune that his brother was kidnapped by the same gang that kidnapped a banker, Rizwan Dosani, on December 15 last year. Dosani was released on April 12, he said.
Memon tried to escape from the kidnappers' captivity nearly two months ago but he was caught and then tortured severely by his captors. He received head injuries during this time, said Wasif.
According to him, the kidnappers released his brother on Wednesday morning. "He reached Jacobabad and called us, and then he took a bus to Sukkur," he added. Memon is not in good shape and has gone to Karachi for a proper check-up and treatment, said Wasif.
Wasif appreciated the efforts made by Sukkur SSP Tanveer Hussain Tunio, who had launched an operation in Jaffarabad, Balochistan, and in the riverine area of Bagarji near Sukkur to rescue Memon. "My brother was released due to police pressure alone," said Wasif, denying that the family paid any ransom.
