PESHAWAR:

Two suspected militants were killed while a constable was injured in an encounter in Hayatabad on Thursday morning.

Acting on an intelligence report, police raided a house in Phase III near Yousafzai Market where two suspected militants, Faizullah and Sanaullah, had been hiding. Police asked militants to surrender; instead they lobbed hand grenades from the roof of the house, leaving Tariq, a constable, injured. The policemen fired back in retaliation, killing them on the spot.

A police official said the house belonged to Hamidullah, a retired customs superintendent.

“We were informed the suspected terrorists had taken shelter at the house,” he said. “Faizullah was a resident of Charsadda and is believed to be Hamidullah’s son. Sanaullah was his friend and a resident of Naway Kalay.”

Police have yet to ascertain the reason why they were hiding in Hayatabad. “Further investigation into the matter will be conducted by the counter-terrorism department.”

Two suspects were also arrested from the house and were taken for interrogation.
