High-yielding maize: PARC recommends eight varieties

ISLAMABAD:
The Pakistan Agriculture Research Council (Parc) recommended as many as eight high-yielding maize varieties for cultivation in various ecologies. The recommendation would be forwarded to Seed Council for final approval followed by multiplication and distribution among the farmers. In total, 11 proposals were presented in the Variety Evaluation Committee (VEC) meeting including 10 hybrid varieties and one Open-Pollinated (OP) variety. Parc National Coordinator Cereal System Head Mian Abdul Majeed said that it was the first meeting of the VEC on maize since the commencement of the council’s coordination system and requested the members to adopt a soft criteria for evaluation of proposals. Speaking on the occasion, Food Security Commissioner Aslam Gill said only those varieties should be recommended that are high-yielding and disease-resistant.
