Public and private educational institutions across the province will remain open on Thursday (today) despite the announcement of a day of mourning by various political and religious parties to protest Wednesday's militant attack on Karachi's Ismaili community.
"We expect the political and religious groups to respect the earlier decision made by the provincial government and the private schools' associations," Sindh education minister Nisar Ahmed Khuhro told The Express Tribune. "The menace of terrorism can only be defeated with the power of education and hampering the educational activities is tantamount to supporting the militants' cause."
On March 19 this year, the Sindh education department and different associations of private schools had come to an agreement to address the long-standing issue of schools' closure in the wake of protests, strike calls and days of mourning.
"The associations for the private schools will not have the discretion to issue a policy statement about schools' closure in the wake of any strike call or protest announced by political parties," Khuhro had said.
However, despite the directives issued by the education minister, the Board of Intermediate Examinations in Karachi as well as the University of Karachi and Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology have announced to defer examinations scheduled for Thursday.
Meanwhile, the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Hyderabad, which has a jurisdiction covering nine districts of Hyderabad division and Nawabshah district, has also postponed Thursday's examination.
